How to make the most of a fixed-fee appointment

How to make the most of a fixed-fee appointment

It isn’t every day you need to see a solicitor to help you resolve a problem with your relationship, and we understand that when you do, it can be nerve-wracking. At Lawson-West Solicitors we offer a fixed-fee initial appointment of 1 hour, for £225 inclusive of VAT and disbursements. Here are some of our top tips to help you feel at ease, and make the most of your time with one of our dedicated family law professionals…

  1. Before…

  • Get your ID ready to take with you to your appointment. You will definitely be asked for it! You need 1 document that contains a photograph of you (such as your passport) and one that contains your address (such as your driving licence, or a bank statement dated within the last 3 months).

  • Gather some information about your relationship, such as key dates, the family finances, and any arrangements that are in place for your children. Write it down, so you don’t forget!

  • Note down your thoughts, concerns, and observations. That way, you won’t forget anything, and you can make sure we have all the information we need to advise you as effectively as possible!

  • Write a list of questions and your desired outcome. That way, you can remind yourself of anything you really want to know and ensure you get everything from the meeting that you need.

  1. During…

  • Be open and honest. The meeting is an opportunity for you to speak freely about the problems you are facing, and we want you to feel that you can tell us anything. It is so important that we know the truth to make sure that our advice is suitable for your circumstances!

  • Ask questions. Naturally, there will be a lot of information passed between us in the first meeting and it can be easy to forget to ask us about anything you want to know, or don’t understand. Refer to that list you prepared, and don’t be afraid to ask!

  • Don’t worry too much about taking notes. We will do that for you, and we will send you a letter after the meeting setting out the advice, we gave you. There might be some important information you want to note down but try to spend your time talking to us about your problems, and listening to the advice we give you!

  1. After…

  • Keep an eye on your emails. We will contact you to confirm our advice as soon as we can after the meeting and, unless you tell us otherwise, we will send the information by email!

  • Get in touch. Anytime. Whether you don’t quite understand something, or would like to formally instruct us, we are here to help. If we aren’t available straight away, we will always get back to you as soon as we can.

Resolving family matters is complex, both in law and practice. At Lawson-West Solicitors you will be advised by a fully qualified solicitor who will have extensive experience in the resolution of family matters.
