Matt... When did you qualify as a Solicitor?
"I obtained a 1st Class LLB law degree at the University of Wolverhampton before going on to complete the LPC at the same institution, achieving a distinction. I then qualified as a solicitor in July 2022."
When did you begin to specialise in Family Law?
"I have significant pre-qualification experience handling a varied caseload of family matters and I joined the team at Lawson West at the end of last year, having previously worked in a Legal 500 rated family law team at a regional firm in the West Midlands, a prominent high street practice in Stafford, and two well regarded firms local to Shropshire.
I have experience of all areas of family law, with a particular passion for cases involving the arrangements for and wellbeing of children. I understand that visiting a family lawyer is one of the last things a client wants to do. I always put clients first and strive to be approachable and empathetic, whilst providing clear, honest, and realistic advice, which is important, I think.
I’m a member of Resolution and strive to work collaboratively to resolve matters without the need for litigation wherever possible. In those matters where litigation becomes inevitably necessary, I adopt a pragmatic but robust approach to best represent my clients’ interests."
If you had a magic wand, what would you change about family law?
"I would make the family justice system more accessible to everyone. I often meet with people who simply cannot afford to pay for someone to represent them but aren’t entitled to any assistance with their funding. I firmly believe access to justice should be for everyone, not just the select few that can afford to pay for it.
I would also cast some kind of spell that does away with all the animosity and acrimony between the parties, and sometimes their lawyers. It doesn’t help anyone, and just adds to the parties’ costs unnecessarily. If everyone were to work together, the process would be much easier for those involved!"

"I’m from Telford in Shropshire, a very beautiful part of the country and I’m out and about regularly there too. I’m also familiar with Staffordshire and Leicestershire, where I have lived and worked. I enjoy watching and playing golf, exploring the UK, and taking long walks with my wife and our Labradoodle, Monty."
