It's National Apprenticeship Week!

As it is 'National Apprenticeship Week' we thought it was the perfect opportunity to feature our fantastic Apprentices here at Lawson-West.

It is with great delight that we have offered formal apprenticeships to Theanne Holcroft & Megan Hodson.

We aim to nurture individuals who are willing to learn the ropes and provide office-based experience and a job opportunity to those starting-out on their career journey.

In their own words:

"I joined the Lawson West Conveyancing department back in September 2022 as an Apprentice Legal Administrator. I have since then completed my apprentice with Damar Training in December 2023 gaining a level 3 distinction in business administration. In March 2024 I will begin my second apprenticeship with Lawson West training to become a paralegal.

I chose to do an apprenticeship as the learning whilst on the job aspect appealed to me as many people go to university for a couple of years and do not necessarily gain any actual on the job training, just a qualification. Another thing that I love about this apprenticeship is that we are given one day a week for off-the-job learning and it is because of this that I was able to complete my studies and ensure that my performance at work was not affected. The apprenticeship with Damar Training was split into two parts consisting of business and legal. I enjoyed the legal aspect, particularly criminal law, and may continue to do more moving forward.

Within the conveyancing department I assist fee earners on their files and have gained so much experience. I have learned so much about the process of conveyancing, which will greatly benefit me when I decide to buy my first property. All of the members of my team have been very helpful and supportive, as prior to working with Lawson-West I had never even heard of the conveyancing process. While working at Lawson West Solicitors, I gained more confidence with handling clients, such as answering calls or meeting them in person.

The apprenticeship has allowed me to gain valuable experience and knowledge. After finishing the paralegal apprenticeship, I am hoping to be considered for the solicitor apprenticeship."

"I have recently completed a business admin level 3 apprenticeship along with a CILEX Award in Legal Studies with Lawson-West Solicitors. For me, university wasn’t something that I wanted to do, so the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship was very appealing. It has enabled me to learn new skills and knowledge of business and the law industry, whilst gaining experience in a workplace environment.

I began working at Lawson-West in the Commercial department and I am now in the Wills, Probate and Trusts department. It has been interesting to see the difference in how departments work together, in order to achieve the same goals for the business.

By doing an apprenticeship, I have definitely found the transition from college to being in a work environment a lot easier and smoother. By gaining this qualification in a law firm, I have been able to learn a lot about the legal industry. Law is something that I have always found I had an interest in, and it will help me to progress in the future as I have the potential to get extra qualifications, such as by doing a paralegal apprenticeship.

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering it, as I think it’s a great way to progress in the world after GCSE’s or A-levels. Also, if you are interested in a particular industry, it can allow you to get a job somewhere that you will find enjoyment in."

Head of HR & Operations, Hannah Warren, comments:

“This has been our first foray into offering apprenticeships at Lawson-West and we have been absolutely delighted by how successful this scheme has been. It has been a pleasure to watch Theanne and Megan progress, in not only their professional skills and abilities but flourish in confidence as people and we are proud that both young talents will be staying on to develop further with the firm. This is a credit not only to their hard work and commitment, them but to those supervising them in their respective departments. We are also very grateful to Kim and the rest of the team at Damar Training who facilitate these apprenticeships and have made it a very smooth and stress-free experience.  On the back of this fantastic outcome we look forward to welcoming more apprentices at Lawson-West in the future.”
