Can you answer, with a bit of a narrative, the following please

Charley Kelly solicitor

When did you qualify as a Solicitor?

I qualified as a solicitor in April 2015 after I completed my training contract.

When did you begin to specalise in Family Law?

I have always primarily worked in Family Law, even when I undertook work experience as a teenager and in breaks from University. My first legal role saw me work at a law firm in Birmingham as a Paralegal in January 2012. I immediately undertook care of a caseload of files and worked part time whilst I completed the Legal Practice Course on a full time basis. The hard work and long hours paid off as I achieved a Distinction on the Legal Practice Course and I was awarded a prize for achieving the highest mark of the year in Property law, but most importantly, I did all of that whilst ensuring that the cases assigned to me at the firm where I was working, were run to a high standard and positive results for the clients were achieved.

Following completion of the Legal Practice Course, I then undertook my training contract with the same firm and after qualification remained at that firm until June 2021 when I joined Lawson-West Solicitors having relocated to the local area from Birmingham.

What do you enjoy about Family Law?

I have always had a passion and drive to help people, and this is what ultimately led me to wanting to study the law and practice family law. I believe that aspects of family law affect everyone on so many different levels and that is why it is so important that key advice is given to people who often find themselves in highly emotive situations where they cannot see anyway through. Sometimes even the smallest piece of advice can be lifechanging to a client and can make a world of difference to them and their situation.

There are also many common misconceptions in family law that people assume to be true, especially if they are told the information by people they love or have had a relationship with. It is for that reason that family law can be so empowering to those most vulnerable and why I am passionate that practicing family law goes a small step towards helping those most vulnerable.

What is your greatest success in your career?

I believe that there is only one great success that can be achieved in your career and that is knowing that you have continued to strive to help clients through difficult situation by guiding them with compassion and understanding, whilst also helping them to achieve the positive result they seek.

If you had a magic wand, what would you change about Family Law?

If I had a magic wand I would help to set-up and establish professional services/venues/activities that could assist parents in trying to re-establish lost relationships with their children when the children feel torn between parents. All too often, there are missed opportunities for work, therapy or conversations that could have made the world of difference to a child/their estranged parent and their outward view of relationships moving forward. I believe that children should be assisted and guided with reconciliation, where appropriate, and that there should be more support for the parent who is not the sole carer to try to rebuild and reconnect with their children.
