Once your employer is aware of your pregnancy you should be allowed paid time off to attend ante-natal appointments. You may have to let your employer see your ante-natal appointment card as they do have the right to see this to confirm the appointment times. Employers should not require you to make the time up or take annual leave for such appointments, if you are prevented from taking time off for your appointments this could amount to an act of discrimination.
If during your pregnancy you are off work with a pregnancy-related illness, you must be paid and treated the same as you would be if you had a non-pregnancy-related illness. It is important that an employer should not include pregnancy-related illness for any disciplinary action relating to sickness absence.
Please do be aware if you are off work for pregnancy-related reasons in the four weeks before your baby is due, your employer has the right to start your maternity leave from the day after the first day of your absence.
