Research undertaken by cloud computing company Rackspace recently, showed that an increasing number of people are leaving internet passwords to other people in their wills. The research showed that the UK has a £2.3 billion digital inheritance, with more than 25% of those polled having over £200 worth of films, video and music stored online.
Nearly a third of the 2,000 adults involved in the survey felt that their online investment was significant enough to be passed on to loved ones, while 11% of those asked had already included internet passwords in their wills.
Billions of pounds worth of music, film and photos are stored in ‘cloud’ services such as iCloud, Facebook, Hotmail and Flickr including "special photos", treasured videos and even sentimental emails from loved ones.
By passing on passwords to such services in their Wills, people are ensuring their digital property does not get lost. Alistair Dobson, Wills & Probate Partner at Lawson-West commented: “Making a Will is the best way to protect your assets for your family, and music, video and photos held online are becoming increasingly important assets to some people. By including them in your Will, you can be sure they don’t get lost or forgotten.”
