New figures show that the number of separating parents ordered to attend parenting classes by judges has tripled to 3,000 in the past five months.
And, according to CAFCASS, the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service, as many as 12,000 parents will have undergone parenting classes on the orders of judges by April 2011.
The ‘separated parents information programmes’ are intended to limit the impact of the parents’ separation on their children. They are run by specially trained mediators at contact centres, and sometimes involve separated parents having meetings with their children under supervision.
A spokeswoman for CAFCASS said the growth in referalls by judges was due to a greater awareness of the classes, improved partnerships between the courts and CAFCASS itself, and the removal of an attendance fee from April 2010.
