A survey by the road safety charity, Brake, found that children in Preston have a 1 in 206 chance of being injured on the roads compared with a 1 in 1158 risk for children in Kensington and Chelsea.

The survey, Road Safety Analysis, looked at 120,000 road traffic accidents involving children in the period 2004 – 2008 and used post codes to compare risk areas with children aged up to 15 across 408 local authority areas.  However, the actual level of risk may be higher than the reported level as Road Safety Analysis only looked at road traffic accidents that had been reported to the police.

Locations with relatively high risks of children being injured in a road traffic accident are:-

Preston City – 1 in 206;

Liverpool City – 1 in 234;

Barrow Borough – 1 in 238;

Blackpool – 1 in 251;

Wyre Borough – 1 in 254.

In contrast, regions with the lowest risks of children being injured in a road traffic accident were:-

Kensington and Chelsea – 1 in 1158;

Richmond upon Thames – 1 in 1038;

Shetland Islands – 1 in 1024;

Camden, London – 1 in 914;

Westminster, London – 1 in 892.

Further studies into the data will be undertaken but it is thought one of the risk factors is that children from deprived areas are more likely to live near major urban roads, more likely to walk or ride bikes and less likely to have secure gardens to play in.

The study also found more accidents happened on Fridays or Saturdays with the fewest injuries from road traffic accidents happening on Sundays.  It also found that May was the most dangerous month with 25% more injuries happening than in the winter months.
