Figures released by the Health and Safety Executive show that between April 2009 and 31 March 2010, 13 workers were killed at work in the East Midlands. This compares with an average of 14 work-related deaths per year in the last five years and 11 work-related deaths in 2008 – 2009.
Nationwide, the number of work-related deaths has fallen by 15% on the previous year to 151.
Lawson-West solicitors welcome the overall reduction. However, even one fatality a year is too many and most of these deaths could have been prevented if health and safety precautions and training for staff had been in place.
Agriculture was shown to be the most dangerous industry to work in and the Health and Safety Executive launched a campaign earlier in the year to raise awareness of health and safety in this sector.
