Lawson-West your legal partner for life
Certain models of leather sofas bought from Argos, Homebase and Land of Leather sourced from Linkwise in China, were triggering skin rashes, blistering and burns in people, some severe enough to require hospital treatment. Lawson-West, solicitors, are now acting for a number of clients seeking compensation.

Initial investigations focused on the chemicals coating the leather seating and also considered the foam cushioning and fibre fillings in the sofas. All these were ruled out.

The investigation then focused on the sachets supplied in the sofas to prevent mould. The anti-mould chemical used was di-methyl fumarate (DMF). In tests the DMF was found to cause skin irritation within 2 – 4 days, so confirming that the anti-mould sachets and the DMF in particular had caused the skin allergies and irritations.

Further testing found that DMF was able to escape the sachets placed inside the sofas, because it turns from a liquid to a gas when heated so a sofa kept in a warm lounge or exposed to sunlight was sufficient to turn the DMF from liquid to gas. The leather then acted as a sponge and absorbed the DMF, so the DMF came into contact with the skin of people using the sofas.

Fortunately there should be no long-term damage to people affected by DMF, except that they will continue to be allergic to DMF. However, anyone who has suffered severe allergies, blisters and burning is entitled to compensation for their injuries.

Argos have admitted liability, subject to medical evidence demonstrating that skin allergies have been caused by the sofas. Lawson-West, solicitors, can provide expert help and would be happy to advise you on this matter, even if you are not based in Leicestershire.
