The first week in January historically records more divorces being commenced than at any other time of the year, with the first Monday after people go back to work in particular showing a record number of people visiting solicitors to instigate divorce proceedings.
Alistair Dobson, Family Law Solicitor at Lawson-West comments: “The sudden rise in numbers we see every January reflects what most specialist family lawyers will recognise as the effect of the Christmas and New Year break.”
Rather than inspiring feelings of goodwill to all men, the combined financial and emotional pressures of Christmas sometimes prove to be the last straw for a relationship that’s in trouble, convincing one or other parties that the marriage has come to an end.
Many people put off taking the first step to divorce in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Understandably, they prefer to get Christmas out of the way, and delay proceedings until January.
Alistair continued: “Getting divorced is often the first resolution a partner in a struggling marriage makes in the New Year. At Lawson-West we have many years’ experience of helping them through what can be a difficult time, and even though this is our busiest time of the year, we offer free initial legal advice and will always make time to help.”
