Lawson-West, solicitors, are acting for a number of clients who have suffered painful inflammations, blisters, weeping sores, cracked skin and severe skin rashes, some of which have led to burns, from leather sofas bought from Argos, Homebase and Land of Leather. Some clients’ blisters and burns have been severe enough to warrant hospital treatment, in some cases for a week.
Investigations have found the cause to be the anti-mould chemical placed in sachets in the sofas. The anti-mould chemical is di-methyl fumarate (DMF). DMF has been able to escape the sachets placed inside the sofas because it turns from liquid to gas when the sofa is in sunlight or in a heated room. The leather on the sofa then absorbs the DMF, so anyone sitting on the sofa comes into contact with the DMF. DMF causes severe skin irritation in less than a week.
Argos have admitted liability, subject to medical evidence demonstrating that skin allergies have been caused by the sofas. People who have suffered severe skin rashes, blistering or burns are entitled to compensation. Lawson-West, solicitors, are already acting for a number of people who have suffered a severe skin reaction to the sofas, and are concerned that there are still many more suffering who are not aware of the cause of their problems.
