Holidaying in the Caribbean conjures up images of sun-soaked sandy beaches and welcoming blue seas with a wealth of wildlife: time to relax… Definitely not a time to pick up a sickness and diarrhoea bug, that’s not just a result of too much rich holiday food!

Unfortunately, it can happen, as guests at the Bahia Principe San Juan hotel in the Dominican Republic have discovered. At least three people required hospital treatment and dozens more fell ill. Guests have complained about undercooked, lukewarm food and about hygiene conditions at the hotel. Whilst returning to Gatwick, others became ill during the flight and a doctor was sent onto the aeroplane to treat patients before they disembarked. Thomas Cook, who are working with the Federation of Tour Operators, have sent a hygiene expert to determine the cause of the illnesses.

What can you do if you fall ill abroad due to food being improperly prepared or poor hygiene?

1. Report it to the staff and/or travel representative.

2. Get medical help: it’s no fun being ill on holiday and you need to ensure you get the right treatment to recover swiftly.

3. Get names and contact details of witnesses.

4. Keep a record of any extra expenses incurred as a result of your illness.

On return to the UK, speak to a specialist personal injury lawyer, who will offer free initial advice, to see if you can claim compensation for your illness and extra expenses incurred.
