Staff at Lawson-West solicitors were today presented with their Right to Read certificates from pupils at Humberstone Junior School.
Mark Evans, Harby Kaur, Julie Scothern, Jane Dodson and Jo Wright all visited pupils every Wednesday and Thursday lunch-times, to help children improve their reading skills.
As well as helping them improve their reading ability, volunteers became aware that the children's confidence also grew over time.
Julie Scothern, who co-ordinated the Right to Read programme for Lawson-West volunteers commented;
"I thought it would be difficult to fit the hour of reading in to a busy working day but I actually found it helped me to relax. Spending an hour with the kids was really worthwhile and I found that they got a lot out of it. The kids see you as a friend rather than a teacher and seem to enjoy doing the reading more because of this. I am, taking part in it this school year and would recommend it to anybody whose interested."
This Spring term there were 1000 volunteers partnering 4000 children across the county and city. This is an increase of over 50% from last year.
