Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome is an industrial illness and can have the symptoms:-

•         persistent tingling in fingers;
•         numbness in fingers;
•         loss of feeling in fingers;
•         loss of strength in fingers and hands.

This can leave the sufferer unable to pick up small objects or being less able to lift heavy objects and can be painful.

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome can result from long-term use of hand-guided power tools or where an employee has to operate hand-held power equipment such as pneumatic drills, chainsaws, power movers, chipping hammers, hammer drills, disc cutters, grinders, sanders or concrete breakers.  Employers do have a responsibility to minimise risks of developing Hand Arm Vibration for employees who are provided with such power tools and equipment to do their job.

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome is preventable, if employees are given rest breaks or use machinery which can cause Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome on a rota basis so minimising the risks of developing Hand Arm Vibration SyndromeHowever, once Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome has developed, it is permanent.  Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome can leave employees unable to do detailed work so an employee who develops Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome may have to be found alternative work or leave their job.

Employees with Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome can develop Vibration White Finger in cold and wet conditions.  Vibration White Finger causes fingertips to go white and then red, the change from white to red becoming very painful
