We are often consulted about the rights of squatters who are not just people occupying a vacant house as a hippy commune but also people who extend their gardens or even occupy large areas of land without permission. In one famous case in 2002, a land owner lost several million pounds because he had granted permission to the farmer to use the land for grazing.  When the permission ended, the land owner did nothing and the farmer remained in possession for over 12 years.  Therefore, instead of the land owner being able to develop his own land, the land became owned by the farmer.
