26% admit to secret thoughts about divorce or separation

Relationship support charity OnePlusOne has released research showing that some 26% of British parents who live with their partner and children have contemplated divorce or separation in secret.

And, although 6 out of ten people in a relationship admitted to having had problems with their relationship, 23% had not turned to friends, family or professionals for help with their difficulties.

The report comes as enquiries regarding divorce experience their traditional New Year peak.

OnePlusOne Director Penny Mansfield CBE commented:

"People rarely decide to separate or divorce suddenly – often they've been thinking about it for months, if not years…

"But for many people, the additional stress of Christmas and the start of the New Year bring these underlying problems to the surface, and they make their final decision to part.

"Separated parents who are able to communicate with one another effectively and are able to work out arrangements about money and the children early on have the best chance of preventing their children becoming stuck in the middle of their disputes.”
